Despite the coronavirus pandemic still ravishing the country, the MTV VMA’s went on this year – although it appeared a bit different. Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd and Miley Cyrus and pre-recorded their performances with many people honoring NYC the birthplace of MTV while others filmed from around the world.
The evening was a celebration of Lady Gaga who took home five awards at this year’s VMAs, including the first ever Tricon award, which honors stars who are true triple-threats. In addition to her performances, we were also blessed with 9 different outfits and designer protective masks from Gaga.
The Weekend opened the show with a high energy performance which was capped off with a with digital fireworks display over the Hudson River. But while accepting his awards, he said, “It’s really hard for me to celebrate right now and enjoy this moment, so I’m just going to say justice for Jacob Blake and justice for Breonna Taylor.”
Miley Cyrus gave a nod to her 2013 music video for “Wrecking Ball,” turning the wrecking ball into a disco ball.
But the worst and strangest performances came from Doja Cat and The Black Eyed Peas. For some reason both performers opted to wear lights to illuminate their private regions. Doja Cat also struggeled to keep up with her overdubbed track.
The Black Eyed Peas also replaced Fergie for their performance although the new singer wasn’t privy to the light up crotch outfit.
